CW student makes it to 8th Ateneo National Writers Workshop

Krisza Joy Kintanar

Krisza Joy Kintanar, a 4th year BA English student, made it to the 8th Ateneo National Writers Workshop to be held on October 19-25, 2008 at the Ateneo de Manila University.

Kintanar will be one among the 12 Writing Fellows of the workshop, and one of the three fellows for Fiction. She was also a fellow, along with two other Creative Writing students of UP Mindanao, to the 15th Iligan National Writers Workshop held last summer in Iligan City. Her fiction and poetry have been published in Dagmay, the literary journal of the Davao Writers Guild.

CWP holds 3rd Creative Writing 200a Workshop

“I actually expected harsher criticism,” was what Gabriel Millado, a senior Creative Writing student, uttered with bravado after the UP Mindanao Creative Writing program faculty critiqued three of his short fiction pieces and one novella.

The occasion was the 3rd Creative Writing 200a Workshop of the Creative Writing Program (CWP), held every 1st Semester of each school year, to assist the senior students in producing literary pieces of publishable quality. The first session of this year’s workshop was held at the Audio-Visual Room of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS), last September 20, 2008.

The faculty in attendance included Ricardo M. de Ungria, Timothy R. Montes, Jhoanna Lynn B. Cruz-Daliling, John B. Bengan, and Nino Soria de Veyra. They critiqued the works of the students as well as gave pointers and suggestions on how to revise the pieces.

Aside from Millado, three other senior students presented their creative pieces for discussion. Arian Rey Tejano and Josie Jane Balabag presented their individual collections of poetry. Joy Rodriguez, like Millado, presented her collection of three short fiction and one novella.

The second and third sessions of the 3rd Creative Writing 200a Workshop will be held on September 27 and October 4, at the Audio-Visual Room of the CHSS. Session hours will be from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 1:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Scheduled for the September 27 session are: Rigil Lumingkit (fiction), Krisza Joy Kintanar (fiction & poetry), Lyda Mae Sual (poetry), and Roselle Jimeno (fiction). The session on October 4 will tackle the works of: Myan May Declaro (fiction), Vanessa May Almeria (poetry), and Jasper Nikki de la Cruz (fiction).

The sessions are open for BA English (Creative Writing) students and other interested parties.

Jorolan-Quintero reads paper on indigenous women and education

How do indigenous women look at the Philippine educational system and its impact on their cultural traditions? That is the question that Prof. Genevieve T. Jorolan-Quintero provided some answers to in her paper presentation, “Perceived Effects of Education among Female IPs in the Davao Region.”

Prof. Jorolan-Quintero read her paper before the Valuing Traditions in Shaping the Future: 2nd National Conference on Indigenous Peoples’ Higher Education in the Philippines held at the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP) Pamulaan Center for Indigenous Peoples Education last August 13-15, 2008. The conference was organized and sponsored by USEP, in partnership with Minority Care International and the National Commission for Indigenous Peoples.

Prof. Jorolan-Quintero has done researches on the indigenous people’s culture and traditions, specifically on their oral literature. She is currently working on the narratives of indigenous games in the Davao region, with a University System Research Grant.

Her paper on the “Perceived Effects of Education among Female IPs in the Davao Region” was originally published in UP Mindanao’s academic journal, Banwa (Vol. 2, No. 1, 2005: 86-132).

Humanities professor wins Palanca

Jhoanna Lynn B. Cruz-Daliling

Humanities professor Jhoanna Lynn B. Cruz-Daliling won 3rd prize for the essay in English category of the 58th Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature. This was announced by Rosendo A. Bautista, Deputy Director of the Carlos Palanca Foundation. The Palanca Awards Night will be held on Sept. 1, 2008 at The Peninsula Manila.

The Palanca Awards or Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature is the Philippines‘ most prestigious and most enduring literary awards.

Prof. Cruz Daliling previously won a Palanca award in 1999 — 2nd prize for her full-length play, “Halakata, MS.D.” She is a graduate of the De La Salle University and has taught in DLSU and the University of the Cordilleras before she joined UP Mindanao.

Her winning essay, “Sapay Koma,” will be published in a book that will be available in October.

Ateneo Writers Workshop offers fellowships

The Ateneo Institute of Literary Arts and Practices (AILAP) is accepting applications for the 8th Ateneo National Writers Workshop (ANWW) to be held on 20-25 Oct. 2008.

Each applicant should submit a portfolio in triplicate of any of the following works: five poems, three short stories, written in Filipino or English, with a title page bearing the author’s pseudonym and a table of contents. The 8th ANWW will not be accepting portfolios for one-act plays as a separate workshop will be conducted for this. Details will be announced later this year.

The portfolio must also be accompanied by a diskette containing a file of the documents saved in Rich Text Format.

All submissions must include a sealed envelope containing the author’s name, address, contact numbers, e-mail address, and a one-page resume including a literary curriculum vitae with a 1×1 ID picture.

Twelve fellows will be chosen from all over the country. Food and accommodations will be provided.

Ford Foundation awards study grants to Bengan and Dy

Ford Foundation named John Bengan and Jean Claire Dy as Ford Fellows-Elect for the school year 2009-2010. Ford awarded both Humanities faculty members MA study grants: Bengan for Creative Writing and Dy for Media Arts.

John Bengan

John Bengan graduated with a BA English (Creative Writing) degree from UP Mindanao. He has been a faculty member of the department’s Creative Writing Program for the past three years. He was awarded fellowships to the Iligan National Writers Workshop and the Dumaguete National Writers Workshop. His short story, “Higher Orders,” earned Bengan second prize in the 2005 Philippines Free Press Literary Awards. His fiction pieces have been published in several anthologies and national magazines.

Jean Claire Dy

Jean Claire Dy graduated with a BA Creative Writing degree from Silliman University in Dumaguete City. She has been a faculty member of the department’s Creative Writing Program and Communication Arts (Media Arts) Program for the past four years. She was awarded fellowships to the Dumaguete National Writers Workshop and the University of the Philippines National Writers Workshops. Dy also received a training grant to learn new media technology in Malaysia. Her creative pieces has been published in several anthologies and national magazines.

Bengan and Dy will be attending a series of seminars with the Philippine Social Science Center (PSSC), Ford Foundation’s international partner in the country, to prepare them for application and eventual study in a university overseas.

UP Mindanao Wiz Kids

UP Mindanao won first place in the European Union (E.U.) Whiz – Mind Encounter Contest held on July 10, 2008 at SM City Davao.

UPMIN won over a field of ten schools composed of Ateneo de Davao University, Brokenshire College, Davao Doctors College, Holy Cross of Davao College, John Paul II College of Davao, Jose Maria College, Rizal Memorial Colleges, San Pedro College, University of Mindanao, and UP Mindanao.

The winning UPMIN team was composed of Kelly Marie T. Conlon (3rd yr, BA English), Marlon John V. Danlay (3rd yr, BA Comm Arts), Aaron James P. Jalalon (3rd yr, BS English), and Jessie Ramon P. ComVal teachers train in UP Min

Twenty-two public high school teachers from Compostela Valley recently completed a 15-day Enhancement Program in English Language Proficiency in UP Mindanao.

The Program is part of Compostela Valley Governor Arturo Uy’s support for the Advance Study for Teachers’ Enhancement Program (ASTEP), implemented in partnership with the DepEd-Division of Compostela Valley through Assistant Division Superintendent, Dr. Antonio de los Reyes.

The Enhancement Program, held from May 5-19, was conducted by the Dept. of Humanities under the supervision of Dean Ma. Araceli Dans Lee, and led by Dept. Chairman Prof. Antonino de Veyra, and Training Coordinator Prof. Jhoanna Lynn Cruz-Daliling, with resource persons and facilitators from the Humanities department. Support services were provided by the Office of Extension and Community Service. Aside from language proficiency, the participants were also challenged to come up with their own teaching materials in innovative and creative ways.

According to Governor Uy, the trained English teachers are expected to echo their lessons and train other English teachers back in Compostela Valley province. The Governor said that communication using the English language is the global standard, and that public high schools in Compostela Valley can become globally competitive while being responsive to local English learning needs.
